India’s Covid-19 Cases Top 400,000 as Crisis Deepens

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called on Western allies for broad support as his country set a record for daily coronavirus cases.

Officials confirmed more than 400,000 new cases, the most ever recorded in a single, 24-hour period since the crisis began. Deaths jumped to 3,523. Several countries, including the U.S., have pledged to provide ventilators and other aid in an effort to help stem the outbreak.

U.S. President Joe Biden said his administration is working with vaccine manufacturers to determine ways in which excess doses meant for the American market could be diverted to India.
